         WIGHTLINK – NEW FERRY TRIALS

Please be aware that river trials for the new ‘W’ Class ferry will take place during the months of September and October 2008.

The purpose of the trials will be to:

 1.     Allow Lymington Harbour Commissioners to undertake a detailed safety risk assessment of the operation of the new vessels in the river

2.     Facilitate a crew training and familiarisation programme

3.     Facilitate MCA passenger certification of the vessels

During this period, there will be vessel movements that depart from the normal service schedule.

Please exercise extra caution during this period and give the new vessel/s plenty of room while masters get familiar with the handling characteristics of the new vessels.

During this period extra harbour launch patrols will be in operation and temporary closures of sections of the river may be in operation. Harbour staff on the water will advise.

          LIFEJACKETS FOR RECREATIONAL BOATERS

A recent review of drowning incidents by a panel of UK experts found that lives might have been saved in 69% of incidents had the person been wearing a suitable lifejacket or personal floatation device.

The Lymington Harbour Commissioners support the national lifejacket awareness campaign that has been launched by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in collaboration with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the Royal Yachting Association. It is strongly recommended that all recreational boaters wear a lifejacket that is maintained, correctly worn and fit for purpose whilst at sea.

North Special:    N    50˚ 45.170’
                         W 001˚ 31.553’
