Solent Music Festival

19 September 2018

The Solent Music Festival was founded in 2013 with the aim of attracting the highest possible calibre of classical music performances to the beautiful sailing town of Lymington. Inspired by the romantic tradition, we endeavour to programme different ensembles within one programme. In Schumann’s time, for example, it was common to programme individual movements of symphonies along with piano solos, string quartets, singers – even poetry readings.

Our concerts take place in the beautiful St Thomas Church. Over the past four years many local people have kindly offered to help in whatever way they can, contributing to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere which pervades the festival.

Whats on at This Years Event:

What better way to kick off the sixth Solent Music Festival than with two great favourites - Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no. 5! Violinist Matthew Truscott, flautist Katie Bircher and harpsichordist Steven Devine are joined by colleagues from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Cellist Damien Ventula is returning to the festival by popular demand and will be joined by Matthew Truscott and Steven Devine on 20th September for an intimate evening of baroque chamber music and solo harpsichord.

Michael Portillo will be joining for his Desert Island Discs for piano on Friday 21st September

Saturday!

Our Saturday night concert features the wonderful Irish soprano Ailish Tynan, winner of the Cardiff International Singer of the World recital prize.

She'll be joined by clarinettist Katherine Spencer and Sam Haywood for a stunning programme of Schumann's Liederkreis, Schubert's The Shepherd on the Rock and a selection of his most famous Lieder, including Ave Maria.

Sunday!

We're delighted to welcome Steven Isserlis to the festival, who has devised a wonderfully eclectic programme of Beethoven and Messiaen duos, a Schumann trio (arranged by Steven) and a Fauré Quartet for our closing concert on Sunday 23rd September.
Anthony Marwood and Sam Haywood will be amongst the other musicians taking part.
